The search div is absolutely positioned, so if your horizontal menu of pages takes up more than the space alloted you’ll end up with a situation where the category menu bar over which the search div is positioned will be pushed down several pixels. Because the search div is absolutely positioned, it will not move down with the category menu bar. The solution to this problem is to exclude some of your pages from the topmost horizontal page menu so that it does not take up more than 1 row. Or you can edit the search class in style.css and alter the value “top:180px;” increasing it as needed to reposition the search bar.

.search {

position:absolute;

top:180px;

left:800px;

background:transparent url(images/searchbg.png) no-repeat;

width:275px;

height:40px;

text-align:center;

}

Saturday 658 is just a theme. It won’t perform miracles for your site; but it can help you present a more attractive face without having to spend a dime to look prettier. The key to getting the most out of the theme is to put the most into your site. When you’re writing posts, if you have the ability to add images, do add them because this adds to your site. People tend to respond to images better than to text. It’s suggested that using images with your posts increases readership because people are drawn to the image and will be more likely to read the text even if it’s just out of curiosity to see what the text says about the image.

The image used here for example has nothing to do with the post. It’s just for decorative purposes. Of course, if at all possible your images should have something to do with your posts. Credit for the image used here to Vincent Boiteau [ Vincent Boiteau's photostream ]

Changing the background is easy. Just create a new background image and name it bg1.jpg. Upload it to images and that’s it; but of course, make sure it is styled to accomodate the layout. The current background image is repeating along the x-axis. If you create a background image that ’s not meant to repeat, you’ll need to edit style.css and change the value of repeat in the body class from repeat-x to no-repeat. Likewise if you change it to something that’s supposed to repeat along the y-axis you’ll need to change repeat-x to repeat-y.

The above image is an example of Saturday 658 using a different non-repeating background.

You can of course name your image file anything you want. The name does not have to be bg1.jpg, but if you do name it something other than bg1.jpg make sure you edit style.css and change the body background image file to the name of your file.

For best results your categories should probably not have very long names. In case your categories do have very long names and the horizontal menu gets messed up, you’ll have to edit header.php to change the number of categories to a lower value. Look for
<?php wp_list_categories('title_li=&number=5'); ?>
and change number=5 to a lower value until your categories fit neatly in the horizontal menu space.

The menu is a drop-down menu so your children categories will drop down when the parent category is hovered over.

When you first activate Satruday 658, if your blog doesn’t have any posts you will see some empty areas in the theme. Your featured category will default to the wordpress default category if there’s no featured category set in your theme options.

To make the most of Saturday 658 make sure your blog has some content and at least 2 categories so that there will be a category from which to pull non-featured posts. Also try to have enough posts to accommodate the layout. The theme will display excerpts from 3 posts at the top of your page as shown in the screen-shot above. In order to have your site work the same as in the screen-shot, there needs to be at least 3 posts to display. The three posts need to be in a category that is not the featured category.
